These are decorative frame which are
not simply an aesthetic corollay to a work of art, but constitute an
artistic genre in themeselves. this is an art form which conbines
structural and stylistic elements and represents the evolution of
forms, developments in tastes and a form of craftsmenship that gained
in respect over time.
An awareness of this historic tradition is fundamental to appreciating
the many aspects of artistic craftsmanship, not only regarding frames
and wood carving, but more generally in those areas of excellence for
which Florence is recognized throughout the world, a position of
supremacy to be maintained and proected.
you can just let me know where you
have seen the frame you like (in a museum,)....
PHASE 1: THE PROJECT
....send me an image taken from a
book or give me an idea that i will develop.
You can see how I realize
a typical Baroque frame; the draw, the woodcarving and the
gilding.
 the wood is
chosen according to the object to create. Then, the sides of the frame
can be prepared.
PHASE 2: woodcarving
The shape of the frame is drawn on a
cardboard that will be used as model.
The woodcarving work starts using
large gouges and wooden mallets to remove wide sections of wood.
For the refinement of the
details, a variety of knives and small gouges are
used.
PHASE 3: gilding
The frame is brushed with a warm
mixture of rabbit skin glue to seal the wood and in preparation for the
next layer of material. Then, Two-three layers of a
mixture of water, fine gesso and rabbit skin glue are brushed
on the frame.
The hardened gesso is smoothed by hand with varying degrees of abrasive
material,
Finally 2-3 layers of a mixture of bolo,
a colored earth pigment, and a special fish glue
are applied with a brush. The choice of color of
the bolo, red-brown, yellow or
black is important for the period, style and finish of the
frame.

for Water
gilding or guazzo, the
application of gold leaf is done by wetting the bolo
on the frame with hot water and applying small squares of gold leaf
with a blade and a particular brush. This is repeated until the frame
is uniformly and completely covered.Florentine Frames are unique for
their high quality due to the use of the most noble type of gold 23
¾ karat weight. No other finish can provide the
enduring beauty as genuine gold leaf.
Burnishing is done a few hours after the
application of the gold leaf. The interval depends on the
temperature and humidity of the environment. A
tool with a point made from agate is used to smooth and
polish the gold. Various sizes of agate tipped burnishers are
used to conform to the detail of the carving.
The last phase is finishing the frame by antiquing
or making the patina. When the frame is completely
burnished the gold is brilliant and shiny. In order
to tone down the color and age
the look of the frame, thin layers of a mixture of water, tempera and
earth pigments are applied. A slight distressing of the finish may also
be used. Lastly, a thin layer of wax is applied for protection.
